How to be a Great Nurse: The Heart of Nursing by Julie Santy Tomlinson & Carolyn Mackintosh-FranklinHow to Be a Great Nurse focuses on fundamental issues that are relevant to all nurses, across all countries, fields and areas of practice. It is essential reading for student nurses, qualified nurses, supervisors, assessors, managers and nurse academics, who all want the nursing profession to invest in the highest-quality care, firmly rooted in the real heart of nursing practice. Each chapter focuses on a particular aspect of great nursing, illustrated by case studies, self-assessment tools and exercises, and supported by suggestions for further reading and self-development. Chapter 1 explores the ‘head, heart and hands principles'of nursing care. Chapter 2 focuses on the core values of nursing practice from a professional perspective, with an emphasis on personal integrity. Chapters 3 and 4 enable readers to reflect on the skills and emotional intelligence needed to be an effective nurse, highlighting the importance of communication and individual learning needs. Career progression, resilience and the support of other nurses are discussed in Chapters 5 and 6. Chapter 7 then draws many of these ideas together by looking at nursing practice from the perspective of those receiving care. This enables readers to deepen their learning and reflect on their own practice. The final chapter considers the future of nursing, and the new nursing roles that may be needed, to ensure that great nurses meet the varied demands of future practice scenarios.
Introducing Research and Evidence-Based Practice for Nursing and Healthcare Professionals by Jeremy JolleyResearch can seem difficult to get to grips with. However, at the heart of this new edition is the view that research is essentially a simple activity, the principles of which can be readily understood by students new to the subject. Each chapter guides the reader to uncover the 'mysteries' of research, exposing each aspect in turn, while demonstrating how research in healthcare is a practical activity, orientated directly to patient care. Fully updated to refer to the latest sources and studies, the third edition includes:  a new chapter on systematic literature views;  a new chapter on research ethics;  a completely revised chapter on evidence-based practice which now focuses more tightly on the implementation of research and other forms of evidence. This book is designed for all students of nursing and allied health professions at any level but who find themselves studying research for the first time. Research is illustrated through examples of activities familiar to students from their daily lives, which help build confidence in undertaking research and evidence-based practice.

Nursing Literature Reviews: A Reflection by Martin LipscombLiterature reviews are undertaken by students, researchers, clinicians and educationalists - that is, almost all nurses. Despite much excellent work, exploring the assumptions and practices that constitute searching for and reviewing literature has merit, and prompting those who undertake these activities to think critically about what it is that they are doing should be encouraged. Widely adopted approaches to structuring reviews (the "standard model") can detrimentally limit the scope or range of literature that is accessed and appraised. It is further proposed that a lack of professional ambition or confidence invests aspects of the way some nurses engage with the sources that are available to them. Across the book, parochialism is challenged. The crucial roles that values and judgement play in reviews are highlighted. It is argued that humanities and arts texts deserve, potentially, a bigger or more assured place in reviews undertaken by nurses. Difficulties in appraising quantitative and qualitative research reports are identified, and benefits linked with taking a contemplative line through the review process are considered. This book contributes to debates around evidence-based practice and literature reviews more generally. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in professional issues, research, and the philosophy and sociology of nursing.

Clinical Challenges: Focus on Nursing by Judy Lumby & Debbie PiconeNurses work across the health care system in a great variety of roles. From patient care to administration, nurses see where the pressures are, and how well we are managing to look after some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Clinical Challenges explores contemporary issues central to nurses' work. Part I explores clinical concerns such as pain and wound management, the role of the nurse practitioner, and the effects of extending life. For many years the health sector has been coping with cutbacks in government funding, and Part II examines how this impacts on the way we handle social illnesses such as suicide and drug dependence, as well as the needs of our growing ageing population. Part III looks at management issues affecting nurses including the growing use of business strategies and rhetoric in the health care system, and the introduction of information systems and of more flexible ways of working. Written by nurses working in a variety of professional roles in the system and critiqued by experts in the field, Clinical Challenges offers valuable insights for nurses at every level, including students.
